Like ‘Man with Toupee’, the Muse of San Tropez is a playful send-up of Baroque portraiture that records for the masses the status, beauty and ostensible wealth of an individual. The Muse stares arrogantly back at us, almost as if to ask the provocative question: do you want to be me? Echoing the modern-day selfie phenomenon, she invites the viewer to remember, admire and in some ways worship her curated image. The work is constructed from an array of acrylic‑painted paper cut-outs, meticulously assembled into a richly textured, multilayered composition, and set within a distinctive hand-painted frame made from composite timber slats that both complements and completes the piece.
