Blushing Bites, 2025
Cristina Doyle
Mixed media on canvas
200 Ă— 150cm
More interesting: Large-scale abstract painting in hot pink, yellow and burgundy. At first glance it reads as a lush, expressive garden — blooms suggested by layered brushwork, drips and sudden flourishes of colour. Look closer and the illusion resolves: it is actually a collection of 32 individual paintings, each a small, self-contained study that contributes to the whole.
Each panel has its own rhythm and gesture. Some are dense with layered impasto and rich burgundy passages; others breathe with translucent washes of hot pink or sunlit yellow. The seams between panels become part of the composition, a cadence that makes the work feel both mosaic and chorus. The repetition of motif across discrete units creates a visual poetry: themes recur, harmonies shift, and unexpected counterpoints emerge.
Mounted together, the panels invite a double reading — as a single monumental statement and as intimate micro-stories. It asks the viewer to move in close to appreciate subtle textures and then step back to experience the overall bloom. The result is a dynamic tension between unity and plurality, colour and structure, intimacy and spectacle. Finished in high gloss, this work has a very contemporary feel.
