Imagine laneways, alleys and dead-end streets of Melbourne CBD at night. This was the inspiration for this work. The composition evokes the city’s hush after hours: narrow corridors of shadow punctuated by artificial light. Pink spray paint slices through the darkness — a deliberate, almost illicit gesture that reads like neon caught in motion. Black fields ground the piece, absorbing and shaping negative space, while points of light, rendered as small dots, map the scattered street lamps and reflective puddles.
The contrast of vibrant pink against deep black, turquoise and ochre that creates tension between urban energy and isolation. Together these elements convey both the anonymity and the intimacy of the city at night: a place where bold acts of colour interrupt quiet, where structure dissolves into atmosphere, and where even the most desolate passageway holds a trace of human presence.
