Break Through 2023

$2,300.00

Cristina Doyle
Mixed media painting on paper
116 × 104cm
Framed

This work employs layered brown and white papers, painted with brown and white acrylic, then sealed with shellac to evoke the sense of something gently unearthed from the surrounding landscape. The shellac curdled over the opaque white areas, producing a distinctive smokey, spotty texture that is both unusual and attractive, inviting closer inspection. Shellac itself is a warm sienna resin derived from insect secretions, lending a subtle organic gloss in parts and a hint of natural history to the surface. The brushwork suggests branches and bracken that alternately obstruct and guide the viewer’s eye toward the central escape point, creating a measured tension between concealment and revelation. The piece is presented in a simple white timber frame that complements and contains its earthy tones.
